Practice cuz you're good!

My 11-year-old daughter is good at singing. And she sings a lot. Like…a LOT. She's really good at matching pitch and finding melodies. I made an off-hand comment to her the other day. It was an accidental comment, but I think it's true. "You're really good at singing; you need to keep practicing. "

It was a strange sentence to come out of my mouth. She doesn't need to practice singing because she's bad, but precisely because she's good.

What are things you're naturally good at? Today's a great day to take inventory and see what you're exceptional at. And keep going down that road. Practice not because you need it, but precisely because you're good at it. Not because you're bad at it, but because you're exploring the edges of how far that skill could take you.

And don't avoid the practice because you can just naturally get away with a mediocre performance. (Because you know that a mediocre performance from you can still beat the excellent performance of someone else.)

Landscaping, gardening, singing, accounting, spreadsheet-ing, coaching, listening, counseling.
