Four Magic Words

When people leave, it's easy to say this was just a one-time deal. Or this is just part of the usual ebb and flow of organizations. This is a normal season.

But what if the people leaving are your best and strongest members? What if my best students are engaging in leave-taking behavior? How do you ensure that they don't leave?

What if language is the key? What if four magic words could help you keep them engaged and keep them from leaving?

Here are my four magic words: "I'm glad you're here."

Reengage your team with language—particularly thankfulness. Be specific: I notice your effort here and you did great. I saw the tough situation you went through. I acknowledge how tough it was. You did an amazing job.

"I'm so glad you're in my class."
"I'm so glad you showed up today."
"I'm glad you put in the effort for this assignment."

But there's a BUT, and you know what that BUT is. You can't just say it. You have to…you know...mean it.
