How Will I Know?

In February 1986, Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know?" was the number one pop track. Her question was: how will she know if he's in love or if she's in love or if it's the right time or if they're on the path to something deeper. The allure of knowing is powerful.

In your life, how will you know if you're on the right track to making some big changes? How will you know if you're on the path to something bigger and deeper?

So many of us are living days where we know what to expect all day. We're living a changeless existence.

Knowing is knowing:

-how the day will unfold

-how the meetings will go

-what you can expect from your colleagues

-how things will shape up financially

-what will be said in the meetings

-how you will feel

-how you'll respond

This one simple question will move you toward massive change in your work, personal, and spiritual life: How much discomfort are you experiencing?

Not knowing is uncomfortable. When you play an instrument, if you play the same things you always play, you're going to know what you've always known. It sounds dumb to even write out, but it's true. You have to learn new scales and new licks to know new scales and new licks. Not knowing is going to make you feel uncomfortable.

If you are in a season of challenge and change, you will feel off balance. It will feel wrong. That alarm will go off in your brain: "This feels terrible!"

Not knowing is not knowing:

-how you'll feel

-how much it will hurt financially

-how much physical discomfort you'll experience

-how the day will shape up

-how rattled your spirit will be

-how unsettled you'll be

Every great faith story is about someone leaving the comfort of knowing. Same in business.

But every person who wanted more had to leave knowing. There is a sort of mystical trust in the process of not knowing. Knowing that it will turn out in the end.

How will I know? It will suck. That's how you will know.
