The Twigs

When you picture a fireplace fire, you envision the logs. The roaring fire. But you don’t imagine one of the most important parts of a fire: twigs.

Almost nobody thinks of twigs and certainly nobody buys them. In fact, you can’t even buy twigs at the store.

But when you build a fire, the logs are certainly important, but just as important are the twigs.

(Also, be sure and build the fire in a log cabin style. I have strong feelings about this design. And every fire needs a heart: a central spot that you focus on to keep the entire stack rolling. I’m right. Debate me.)

A Bible verse says it well:

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”

Don’t overlook the twigs—those small, dry, seemingly inconsequential pieces of trash laying around. The twigs catch easily and quickly. They build momentum for the sticks, and the sticks build momentum for the logs.

Everybody is looking for that big win: the social media-worthy success that lights up your career or your family.

But don’t despise the small things.

-Wake up a little early to meditate.

-Give your kids a hug.

-Write your spouse a sweet note.

-Tell someone thank you.

-Be generous in traffic.

All of these actions are within reach; you don’t have to go far to find them.

The world needs you and your success today. Gather up those seemingly meaningless twigs. Gather them, light them, and see what happens.
